Wheat Kings' Comeback Falls Short

It was a fruitless three-game home stand for the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The club dropped a 4-3 decision to the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night and 0-and-3 on the home stand and have now lost five in a row overall.

Winnipeg product Cody Eakin scored a pair of goals for the Broncos, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old and were ahead 4-1 midway through the second period.

"We came out slow. I didn't think we had a good start and it sort of cost us towards the end of the game," says Brandon forward Mark Stone, who had a goal and an assist in the contest, "Being down 4-1, it's pretty hard to overcome. I think we made a valiant effort to come back in the latter part of the second and in the third but when you get down 4-1, it's pretty tough to get back in it."

Shayne Wiebe and Rene Hunter also scored for the Wheat Kings, with Hunter's first career WHL goal with 3:36 left in the third period snapping an 0-for-28 slump on the power-play for the Wheat Kings.

"It went through a maze of went through a lot of bodies to get in there," says Stone, "I think we had some good looks today, and even the second goal was at the tail-end of a power-play so I think if we can build some momentum off that late power-play goal, we should be able to get this power-play going."

Stepan Novotny and Jordan Evans had the other goals for Swift Current while Winkler product Mark Friesen stopped 24 shots in the Broncos' net.

Ty Rimmer made his first home start of the season for the Wheat Kings and finished with 25 saves.

Brandon now plays the first of eight consecutive road games Saturday night when they visit the Broncos in Swift Current (8:00 p.m., CKLQ).

Chaff...The last time Brandon lost five consecutive games was October 19-26, 2007…Brandon had won 11 of their previous 12 home games versus Swift Current before Friday night's loss…the Wheat Kings are now 2-5-0-0 in games decided by two goals or less this season...former WK G Jacob De Serres is expected to get his first start with Saint John Saturday night when the Sea Dogs host Rouyn-Noranda. There's a great article on De Serres here...
