Ice Win Shootout Over Wheat Kings

The Brandon Wheat Kings went to extra time for the first time this season, and it was an unsuccessful venture.

The Kootenay Ice went 3-for-3 in the shootout to defeat the Wheat Kings 5-4 on Friday night in Cranbrook, ruining a solid performance from Brandon goaltender Liam Liston, who had stopped 37 shots through regulation and overtime.

The Wheat Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Brendan Walker, Brodie Melnychuk and Mark Stone but then watched the Ice score the next four goals to take a 4-3 with just over eight minutes remaining.

Hampus Gustafsson then sent the game into overtime by scoring his first goal as a Wheat King with 7:26 left in regulation.

“I thought we made good plays to score, and I thinik we could have made more plays through the first 40 minutes of the game than what we did,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I thought each of our goals were real nice players. We didn’t shoot the puck enough, and that was part of it, and we were badly outplayed in the second perioid and that was part of it as well.”

Brayden McNabb, Joey Leach, Christian Magnus and Drew Czerwonka scored in regulation for the Ice, who have won seven in a row and increased their Eastern Conference-leading record to 11-3-0-1.

The Wheat Kings do earn a single point from the regulation tie and move to 6-9-0-1 on the season.

Brandon finishes their road trip Saturday night, when they visit the Lethbridge Hurricanes (7:30 p.m., CKLQ).

Chaff…Brandon was 0-for-3 on the power-play and 5-for-6 on the penalty-kill…the Wheat Kings’ scratches Friday were D Ryley Miller (concussion), F David Toews (ankle), F Jens Meilleur (hand), F Jon Gaudet (healthy) and D Spencer Galbraith (healthy).
