Brandon Game Notes: The Brandon Wheat Kings open their 44th season in the Western Hockey League Friday night as they host the Regina Pats (7:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ). The Wheat Kings are coming off just the fourth 50-win season in franchise history, accumulating a 50-18-1-3 record a year ago on their way to capturing the East Division pennant. That banner will be raised to the Westman Communications Group rafters as part of the pre-game festivities Friday.

Vs. Regina: Friday’s game is the first of eight meetings between the Pats and Wheat Kings this season. Brandon went 7-1-0-0 against Regina last year including a 4-0 record on home ice. Matt Calvert (7 G, 10 A) and Brayden Schenn (5 G, 11 A) led the way offensively for Brandon last season. The two teams will play the back half of the season opening home-and-home series Sunday afternoon in Regina (3:00 p.m. CST, 880 CKLQ)

2010 Pre-Season: The Wheat Kings went 3-1-0-0 during the 2010 WHL pre-season including a perfect 2-0 record at home. Shayne Wiebe led Brandon in scoring with 10 points (5 G, 5 A) in four games while Jason Swyripa (1 G, 6 A) and Brenden Walker (1 G, 6 A) had seven points apiece.

Special Teams: The Wheat Kings went 7-for-22 (31.8%) on the power-play in four pre-season games while they were 74.2% on the penalty-kill (23-for-31). During the 2009-2010 regular season, Brandon finished ninth in the WHL in power-play success rate (75-for-343, 21.9%) and 17th in the WHL in penalty-killing (212-for-276, 76.8%).

Roster: Brandon’s roster includes 32 players (5 goaltenders, 10 defensemen and 17 forwards). The roster has 14 returning players and 18 rookies. 15 players are from Manitoba, 10 from Alberta, 6 from Saskatchewan and one from Denmark. Two players are still away with NHL teams in Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles) and Scott Glennie (Dallas).

Who’s Hot: F Shayne Wiebe had points in all four of Brandon’s pre-season games (5 G, 5 A)…F Jason Swyripa (1 G, 6 A) and F Brenden Walker (1 G, 6 A) also had points in all four pre-season games.

Milestones: Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon enters the 2010-2011 season with 298 career coaching victories, two shy of becoming the 17th coach in WHL history to reach the 300 win mark…D Darren Bestland is six minutes shy of 200 for his WHL career…F Mark Stone is five games shy of 100 for his career…12 of the 32 players on the Wheat Kings’ roster could be making their WHL regular season debuts this weekend including 20-year old forward David Toews and 19-year old import Mark Mieritz. Of the rookies, Ty Rimmer, Rene Hunter, Kyle Krzyzaniak and Wheaton King have already seen action in a regular season contest while Jordan Fransoo played four playoff games last spring, but has yet to play a regular season contest…Shayne Wiebe leads Brandon with 204 career games played, followed by Brodie Melnychuk with 201…Melnychuk has played in 132 consecutive regular season contests.

Did You Know: The Wheat Kings have won 10 straight home openers including last year's 3-0 win over Swift Current. The last Brandon loss to open their season at home was in 1999, a 5-4 loss to Regina…Brandon had won nine straight regular-season openers prior to dropping their first game in Prince Albert last year by a score of 6-1...D Brodie Melnychuk attended Anaheim’s Rookie Camp this month on a free agent tryout…the Wheat Kings passed the 2,850 mark for season tickets sold earlier this week…among the opening night festivities Friday will be a special look back at the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup, which is presented by RE/MAX and is slated to start at approximately 7:25 p.m…Memorial Cup chairperson Jeff Cristall, WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and CFB Shilo Commanding Officer Lt. Col Shane Schreiber will be on hand for the ceremonial opening face-off on Friday.
