Wheat Kings Suffer Loss in Final Pre-Season Tilt

The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out their pre-season with a 5-4 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night.

Dylan Hood and Danny Gayle had a goal and an assist each for the Warriors while Brenden Walker, Jordan Fransoo, Jason Swyripa and Kyle Krzyzaniak scored for Brandon.

Brandon trailed 2-1 and 4-1 at the period breaks and the deficit turned out to be too much to overcame despite a strong third period.

"I thought we started fairly strong in the first period. We didn't come out with a lead, but we had a good opening period for a road game," says Wheat Kings' rookie defenceman Jordan Fransoo, "The second period, we lulled off a little bit and, in the third period, I thought we picked it up again."

The 6-foot-2, 190 pound Fransoo finished the pre-season with a two goals and four points in three game, tops among all Brandon defencemen.

"I thought I played pretty strong throughout the whole pre-season," says Fransoo, who saw action in four playoff games last spring, "I was trying to improve as we progressed and I worked on my defensive play a little bit, shots on goal and trying to get everything through to the net and down low."

Jacob De Serres and Liam Liston split Brandon's goaltending duties Saturday, with De Serres stopping 17 of 20 shots in the first 31 minutes and Liston blocking 11 of 13 the rest of the way.

The Wheat Kings now prepare for the start of the regular season.

Their year will begin Friday, when they host the Regina Pats.

Chaff...Shayne Wiebe led the Wheat Kings with five goals and 10 points in four pre-season games while Brenden Walker and Jason Swyripa had a goal and seven points apiece...Brandon product Joel Edmundson picked up an assist for the Warriors, and finished the pre-season with one point in seven games...Brandon product Brayden Cuthbert had two assists in seven pre-season games with the Warriors.
