Wheat Kings Set to Retake Ice

The Brandon Wheat Kings will practice as a team for the first time Tuesday.

The club reduced their roster to 35 players following the completion of training camp with Jens Meilleur one of 18 forwards still with the team.

"I definitely put it all out there," said the 6-foot-0, 170 pound Meilleur following Sunday's intrasquad game, "I really wanted to prove to the staff that I could play here this year and I think I did that."

Meilleur spent last season with the MJHL's Waywayseecappo Wolverines, an experiece the 17-year old feels better prepared him for the Western Hockey League.

"Definitely playing with the older guys helped," says Meilleur, "The quicker pace and its more physical and the guys are bigger...it really helped out here with playing with the vets."

Meilleur and the Wheat Kings are beginning preparation for the start of their pre-season.

Brandon's first game is Friday in Regina.

Chaff...six members of the Wheat Kings will leave later this week for NHL camps in forwards Brayden Schenn (Los Angeles), Scott Glennie (Dallas), Mark Stone (Ottawa), Michael Ferland (Calgary) and David Toews (NY Islanders) and defenceman Brodie Melnychuk (Anaheim).
