Walker Campaigning for More Icetime

Brenden Walker had a good rookie season with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

He's hoping to have an even better sophmore campaign.

The 18-year old old Walker notched nine goals and 28 points in 59 games last season while largely seeing fourth line duty but finishing strongly, giving the Ste. Anne product plenty to build on going into 2010-2011.

"It gives you a lot more confidence on the ice, around the rink, around the guys," says Walker, a 12th round pick of Brandon in the 2007 Bantam Draft, "It's a way better feeling than being a rookie, being the young guy. Now guys are looking up to you and it's going to be a good season."

Walker had to take a backseat in the Wheat Kings' offence last year, mainly seeing duty on the club's fourth-line.

But, with Brandon graduating five of their top seven scoring forwards from last season, Walker feels there's a great chance to get more involved with the offensive side of the game.

"I'm good with the offence, and I'd like to do more on the power-play and get more opportunity there," says Walker, "I think it would really help me out and just get an opportunity in for other places like the penalty-kill, a little bit here and there. I just get better and better as more opportunity comes to me."

Walker's quest for more offence has started well.

The 5-foot-11, 181 pound winter has recorded four assists in Brandon's first two pre-season games.

The Wheat Kings continue their pre-season schedule this weekend with a pair of games against Moose Jaw.

Brandon will host the Warriors Friday (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place) and then visit the Crushed Can on Saturday.

Chaff...F Paul Ciarelli (shoulder) practiced in a no-contact jersey on Wednesday while D Darren Bestland (neck) remains absent from practice...Brandon has officially added training camp standout Jon Gaudet to their list. Gaudet, 18, played high school hockey in Winnipeg last season but impressed enough during camp to earn the right to stick around with the club a while longer. Gaudet missed the club's first two pre-season games last weekend with a groin injury but has been practicing all of this week.
