Wheat Kings Move Up, Take Mieritz

The Wheat Kings acquired the 43rd overall pick in the 2010 CHL Import Draft from the Kootenay Ice, and used the selection to choose Danish forward Mark Mieritz.

Brandon sent a sixth round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft to the Ice for the pick in today's Import Draft.

The 5-foot-11, 183 pound Mieritz has played this past two seasons with Frölunda in the Swedish Jr. League, notching six goals and 20 points in 34 games this past season.

A right-winger, the 19-year old Mieritz added two goals and seven points in five games with Denmark at the World Junior Championship Division I tournament last December, helping the Danes to a silver medal.

Mieritz was eligible for the 2009 and 2010 NHL Entry Draft but did not get selected.

Chaff...Medicine Hat used its option to take Brandon's 59th overall pick in the Import Draft, which prompted the Wheat Kings to acquire Kootenay's selection. It was my understanding that the Tigers had the OPTION of switching picks with Brandon (and, in fact, the release issued by the Wheat Kings after last year's Import draft stated that) but, apparently, they had the option of taking the 59th overall pick or a sixth round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. Brandon then dealt that sixth round pick to the Ice for the 43rd overall selection.
