Laxdal Hired in Edmonton

Sources indicate the former Brandon Wheat King Derek Laxdal is the new head coach of the Western Hockey League's Edmonton Oil Kings.

Laxdal has been head coach of the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL for the last five seasons, leading the team to 40 or more wins each year, winning the league title in 2007 and twice being named ECHL Coach of the Year.

Laxdal spent three seasons with the Wheat Kings from 1983 to 1986.

The Oil Kings are expected to make an official announcement later this week.

Edmonton, Spokane and Kootenay are currently the three WHL teams without a head coach.
