Wheat Kings Drop First of 2010 Playoffs

The Brandon Wheat Kings lost for the first time in the 2010 playoffs Wednesday night, dropping a 5-4 decision to the Saskatoon Blades.

Darian Dziurzynski scored a pair of third period goals for Saskatoon, who rallied from a 3-1 second period deficit to climb back into the Eastern Conference Semifinal.

"In the first 10 minutes of the third period, they built a 4-3 lead and then a 5-3 lead heading into the timeout," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "A game that was there for the taking, we didn't do as good a job in the third period as we needed to."

After a scoreless first period, Walker Wintoneak scored 1:33 into the second period to give the Blades the lead. Shayne Wiebe tied it with his first ever WHL playoff goal just 22 seconds later and then Colby Robak and Scott Glennie notched goals for the Wheat Kings to give Brandon a 3-1 lead.

Jyri Niemi and Derek Hulak scored before the end of the second period to tie the game for the Blades, setting the stage for the third period.

"I think we just have to work harder and play a simple game," says Brandon centre Scott Glennie, "We've played a lot better than this and I think we're going to show that come Friday."

Andrew Hayes stopped 23 shots in the Brandon net while Steven Stanford stopped 32 shots for Saskatoon.
