Niemi Won't Be Suspended for Game #5

It appears Saskatoon defenceman Jyri Niemi will not be suspended for the match penalty he incurred in Game #4 on the Eastern Conference Semifinal with Brandon on Friday night.

Niemi was involved in a fight with Brandon defenceman Alexander Urbom at the end of the first period but had tape on the fingers of his right hand, although he did not appear to throw a right-hand punch in the altercation.

Urbom ended up with a cut on his forehead from the fight, which led to the match penalty.

The WHL automatically reviewed the match penalty and determined no suspension was necessary.

Brandon fans may not agree with the decision, but I think the WHL got it right all-around in this instance.

Agreed with the Match Penalty during Friday's game, the way the rule is written, and can't say I can argue that a suspension was warranted.

It's pivotal Game #5 tonight at Westman Communications Group Place.

Game time is 7:30 p.m. and you can hear the game on CKLQ, starting with the pre-game show at 7:00 p.m.
