Hanlon Put in Charge of Slovaks

Former Brandon Wheat King Glen Hanlon is the new head coach of Slovakia's national hockey team.

The Slovak Ice Hockey Federation said Wednesday that Hanlon has been given a four-year contract until the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The 53-year-old Hanlon becomes the first foreigner to coach the team.

He was previously in charge of Belarus, and has also coached the Washington Capitals, Finnish club Jokerit and Dinamo Minsk in Russia.

He replaces Jan Filc, who led Slovakia to fourth place at the Vancouver Olympics and to its only world championship title, in 2002.

Hanlon's first international tournament will be the world championship in Germany in May.
