Wheat Kings Dump Tigers

The Brandon Wheat Kings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and went on to a 5-1 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night.

Brayden Schenn had a goal and two assists for the Wheat Kings while Matt Calvert added his league-leading fifth shorthanded goal of the season.

Scott Glennie opened the scoring 3:25 into the third period with Schenn and Brodie Melnychuk also scoring for Brandon in the opening 20 minutes.

After being shut out on Friday night, Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon said on CKLQ's post-game show that he thought getting some goals early was important for the club.

"I think given (Friday) night, the fact that we had as much trouble putting the puck in the net as we did, I think it was good for our team to get that first one," says McCrimmon, "Then, our team was able to build a 3-0 lead early in the game."

Toni Rajala also scored for the Wheat Kings while Andrew Hayes stopped 29 shots in the Brandon net.

The Wheat Kings welcomed defenceman Alexander Urbom back to their lineup after he missed Friday's game against Prince Albert and the 19-year old made a noticable difference.

"He just finished playing Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday with his Swedish World Junior Team, he travelled Monday to Montreal and travelled back Friday from Montreal so I'm sure he's going to need a few days here to recharge at some point," says McCrimmon, "I thought he made a big difference in the game tonight and played very well."

The Wheat Kings improved to 11-8-0-2 with the victory.

The club is idle until Wednesday, when they host the Prince George Cougars (2:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...C Paul Ciarelli also returned to the Brandon lineup Saturday after missing five games with a shoulder injury...D Mark Schneider sat out Saturday with a leg injury while F Klarc Wilson (illness), F Mark Stone (thumb), F Jordan DePape (foot) and F Wheaton King (healthy) were the other Brandon scratches...the Wheat Kings are now a perfect 7-and-0 on Saturday's this season.
